Bio

Afraa Ahmed (b.1992, Yemen), currently based in Cairo, is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work includes installation, sculpture, photography, and video. She holds a degree in Multimedia Technology from Asia Pacific University in Malaysia, where she embarked on an exploration of how the familiarity and sense of 'safety' associated with home endure within us even after being physically disconnected.

Artist Statement

My practice explores notions of home, identity, belonging, exile, and Isolation. I explore these ideas through my personal experience as an expat living away from her homeland through the use of sculpture and photography as media and techniques rather than materials.

In this regard, I chose the Qamariya - that multicolored glass window made of gypsum that is a distinctive feature of Yemeni architecture, to present it symbolically in a number of my projects.
